We started our persuasive writing unit by reading a book about should children choose their bedtimes. In this book it talked about the reasons why or why not kids should be able to choose their own bedtimes and why or why not parents should do this. The students are now in the process of writing a persuasive paragraph to convince others of their opinion.
In this type of paragraph students should include:
An introductory sentence that states their opinion about the topic
At least 3 facts about the topic
Examples (from their life ) that supports the facts
Concluding sentence that restates their opinion.
Different types of sentence starters are also used in this type of writing. Your child will be coming home with a sheet that will outline these sentence starters.
We have also been looking at including only the information that is necessary to get your point across to the reader without losing the reader’s attention. Is the information a treasure(important and necessary) or is it trash (has nothing to do with the topic or adds too much information).
The students are also still encouraged to practice creative writing that includes their showing skills.
Social Studies
The pioneers unit was started by writing a paragraph about what the students think life was like in the 1800’s.
The next thing we will be looking at will be what provinces include upper and lower Canada and how Canada looked in the 1800’s compared to today.
Math
We are finished our unit on Measurement where the students learned about area, perimeter and different units of measure. We have reviewed the concepts that will be on the quiz on Tuesday and review sheets have also been sent home.
The next unit that we have started is 2D geometry.
Concepts we will be looking at are:
identifying and comparing various polygons (i.e.,triangles,quadrilaterals,pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons) and sort them by their geometric properties (i.e., number of sides; side lengths; number of interior angles; number of right angles).
explaining the relationships between different types of quadrilaterals (e.g.,a square is a rectangle because a square has four sides and four right angles; a rhombus is a parallelogram because opposite sides of a rhombus are parallel).
comparing various angles, using concrete materials and pictorial representations, and describe angles as bigger than, smaller than, or about the same as other angles (e.g., “Two of the angles on the red pattern block are bigger than all the angles on the green pattern block.”).
The students had their last swimming lesson on Wednesday. They learned a lot of valuable skills that are important to know when around water.
Reminder - Tuesday - helmets and homework
